I just read this on the warner site:

"Ranging from the torch light moodiness of opener "Pilgrim" and the cabaret-noir of "The Score" to the stunning balladry of "California" and the uptempo pop of the album's title track, [b:72e23e8f5c]Day One communicates its central themes of ruin and rebirth while still retaining a sense of optimism and playfulness."[/b:72e23e8f5c]

I like that.

Hoo boy. I've been listening to both (major release) albums (does anyone know where I can buy the older releases? Hard to find these days) and was thinking that I've calmed down enough from the initial alubm giddiness to start eyeglassing the new album. Time to break out that Eng Lit education and give it some work....

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but she brings up beauty a few times.

Once in Day One "Beauty faked heart attack"

and in Your Wish Is My Wish "I heard Beauty crying in her sleep"

...I just noticed this the other day.

"I don't need you to buy me dinner. I just need you to love me."

Ooh! On the bird theme, perhaps I'm REALLY slow for noticing this, but there are birds on the album cover! In the top right corner, flying! Big Grin

Is it just me... or is burning things a re-occuring theme with her? There are alot of flames in her poetry book and the album. Perhaps this has to do with the story of the pheonix? How it burned to ashes, only to rise again? Perhaps this symbolizes her time in the cabin? Where she was born anew ?

Also... death is a reoccuring theme. In her poetry book and the album there are many wounded angels and men. Perhaps this signifies from some of her songs how she seems to harm others around her? Or perhaps that she herself feels like a wounded angel ?

Also as a connection maker.. has anyone else noticed that in Howie Beck's "Alice" there is a woman slicing out men's heart (it's a cartoon.. so it doesn't seem as violent) and also how Sarah in her poetry book has a picture of various selves, debating whether or not to rip the man's heart out?

Just ponderings!

` I wanna be the bluebird singing
Singing to the roses in her yard
Roses in her yard her father grew for her
It's been raining like Tennessee honey
So long I got too heavy to fly
Ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing `
