What are your interpretations of these two songs?

[b:9e4e30a1f1].:Lucky Me:.[/b:9e4e30a1f1]

Science wears a new suit
To his coffee, toast and eggs
But he has to skip the stairs now
'cause of two broken legs
whine whine "I cannot climb"
every time's the same
I'd be more inclined to help him
if he could remember my name
And you're sad. And you're sorry.
Well let it all out.
What are you running for?
This is your chance
Be ready
I'm taking my seat
O lucky me

Faith can't fill the dance hall
'cause her powers have declined
But at the beauty pageant
she will always take the prize.
Light, light, Easter white
roll her in the dirt,
when it comes time for kneeling she'll say "you go first"
And you're sad. And you're sorry.
Well let it all out.
What are you running for?
This is your chance!
Be ready
I'm taking my seat
O lucky me

A wise man once tried to tell me
How to sugar-coat the grave
But the game is for the adults
And I don't know how to play
O where will go?
Toss me out to sea
When the jar's all out of candy
don't come blaming me.
And you're sad. And you're sorry.
Well let it all out.
What are you running for?
Tell the whole world!
We're waiting.
I'm taking my seat
O lucky me

[b:9e4e30a1f1].:The Score:.[/b:9e4e30a1f1]

Oh I
Rented a motorbike
And all night
I had the Fear...
But onward,
Oh how the terrifying choice
was clear

So white!
The moon was a wicked site
His cruel wife
Had cut off an ear...
When the fog cleared
I heard the voices of a million cheer

This time
The pleasure's all mine
I've got your number
I know the score
I'd be a hopeless romantic
But for the fortune I made
in gold.

My heart bent
Towards the circus tent
A man in red
Beckoned me near
In his wild eyes
I saw the faces of a million cheer

He said,
"This time,
The pleasure's all mine
I've got your number
I know the score
And you and
your hopeless romantics
Will wipe the highway I pave
in gold..."

In his wild eyes,
Oh how the terrifying choice
was clear
This time...
oh the pleasure is all mine
I've got your number
I know the score
And I'd be
a hopeless romantic...
but for the fortune I made
The fortune I made
The fortune I made
in gold.

Actually, I asked my students the very same question about lucky me not more than a month ago. I found some of their responses both insightful and humorous. So much so, I included them in the scrapbook.

They can be read at:

http://www.littleslean.com/passvol1p26.htm
http://www.littleslean.com/passvol1p27.htm

Unexpectedly, they all wanted to know MY interpretation of the song... and I, of course, had to oblige. I found it both weird and interesting to be "teaching" Lucky Me. I could write a synopsis of what I said in my lecture, but I don't know how interesting you would find it.

"I think the video is about someone who is handicapped and neither science or faith as helped her, and she complains about it, she only waits, then dies"

HAHAH that is adorable! Kids say the darndest things. Those are simply precious Nik! Your day must be marvelous with these little creatures haha.

` I wanna be the bluebird singing
Singing to the roses in her yard
Roses in her yard her father grew for her
It's been raining like Tennessee honey
So long I got too heavy to fly
Ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing `

My personal favorites:

(serious first, humour last)

[quote:690e0fd58c]The lyric of the song of Sarah Slean it shows really like a dilemma between Faith and science, showing science as a cold way of explaining something. While faith is more beautiful; appealing. It's better to have something and believe in it, than to really see the truth.[/quote:690e0fd58c]
[quote:690e0fd58c]What I read of the lyric I understand that science and religion broke up friendship, or that people believe more in the scientific procedure and what the Scientifics said, while in their own faith, I don't know if their faith or that feeling is to God. I think that this song is good because the moment we are all having. People now are believing more to the science because we can prove what we want and the faith no. So this song says the same. Faith now is not only to believe in something, also to prove it or show to others what are you feeling is true and real. I think the video is really good and the girl is beautiful.[/quote:690e0fd58c]
[quote:690e0fd58c]Even I didn't understand the video and the lyrics of the song I liked it and also the girl. She is gorgeous. But well, about science and faith it gives good examples. She made me think an make a reflection of how both are an interesting subject, that if we discuss it on class, we will never finish.[/quote:690e0fd58c]
[quote:690e0fd58c]Personally I don't have any idea what this werid song has to do with the topic we're seeing in our Human Relations class: Religion. It talks about faith but I can't understand the hidden message. So I just hear a sticky song. In the video she looks like she's been in drugs, with bizarre movements but, she's pretty hot though, so that makes it up. The video is funny and the lyrics are easy to understand but I still can't figure out what it has to do with religion.[/quote:690e0fd58c]

As for my marvelous days, for the most part yes. They enchant me. One of my groups in particular just GLEANS everything I have to say. It's an amazing feeling.

If I get the time tonight I'll type up a brief synopsis of my lecture on lucky me.

LOL. I luv Nik's students' interpretations.... especially the been in drugs one, it's funny.

As for interpreting the songs... Lucky Me... well I kind of take this one literally (well... directly). Battle of Science vs. Faith (why can't they just get along?).. without each other they have broken legs and/or can't fill the dance hall, but in the end they both have the same goal; to figure out what the heck is going on in this universe, and in many cases to 'sugarcoat the grave' (i.e. give us a reason to live, and the hope that there really is something after we die)...

The Score... I could be wrong, but it seems like another one of Sarah's crazy yet completely awesome dreams Big Grin

I found Lucky Me fairly easy to interpret..

Obviously it's a comparasion between Science and Faith. I think she's singing about how faith has in a way taken a back burner and isn't trendy enough anymore.(faith can't fill the dance halls.) While Science is new and hip and everything but it lacks the punch that people got from Faith.

"I don't need you to buy me dinner. I just need you to love me."

Typically I go in a different direction from the actual meanings of most songs I like, but that's what's great about interpreting songs into something personal.

In the case of "Lucky Me," I thought it was an autobiographical song of Ms. Slean. The science being her thoughts of going into the field of medicine, something that didn't pan out. The faith was her experience in studying academic music at U of T, which she didn't seem to enjoy much. Sometimes an unfilled dance hall is just an unfilled dance hall, especially true in today's pathetic state of the music industry. Maybe the wise man is Mr. Workman? That would make the game the music company industry which perhaps Ms. Slean feels smothers her creative direction (versus the mindless cacophony that record labels want to peddle)?

The "taking [her] seat" would be where she is now at this point in her life and what she's currently doing: making her own music, writing poetry, and painting. If you don't take the "lucky me" sarcastically, she considers herself lucky.

My interpretation's probably wrong, especially since I've only discovered Sarah Slean about two hours ago while surfing the web for points of fascination. Eh.

Wow. I like that interpretation, and it works (and I'm especially impressed by your research abilities given you found all that out about her in less than two hours!)... I think in a lot of cases songs have many levels to them... you could be singing about something incredibly personal but really be making reference to something much grander and perhaps vaguer; at the same time you could be singing about something really general and conceptual (as in this case... I should note that Sarah has, many times, stated that the song is about the battle of science and faith themselves, not a metaphor) and really be hinting at something else without realizing it. I think that could easily be the case here (perhaps not... but it's definitely a possibility, and i like the theory Smiler).

its all about the metphors

lucky me -

i hear science and faith being two failed, but nevertheless, eternally propped up concepts, despite the fact they're hollow institutions...theyre conveniences depending on the situation and the person in relation to it, that attempt to amount to something of signifigance that we're supposed to know after contemplating a lifetime of experience----something that doesnt appear to be as pleasant as we might have hoped, had we just taken time enough to step out of our rigid establishments, and try to see things in a new light

im probably frigidly cold off base with it, but this is just a commentary on me, not the actual meaning...

lucky me either way, im takin a seat too, i dont want to miss a thing! i bet they come up with some pretty heavy ordinance anytime here....not hope, just suspect

The Score -

uhhh, yea, i dont know the lovely creature, and this is totally my favorite Sarah tune - not especially because of the lyrics, but i love the musical tune to it, and just the way she sings it, so im gonna Temple it and say Chaple Perilous? Not Today!

id be interested to hear what she had to say on it, but as for what it means to me....daaaaaarr

kev-bot LOve sa-rah!?

I don't think I've seen this mentioned for the Score... she said in LA (apparentley [size=7:f8d56ae331]heyguess[/size:f8d56ae331]) that it was about a dream she had that she was on a motorcycle driving to a circus. She stole the motorcycle, actually not what she says in the song.. And this whole time that she was driving she had a very strong assumption, she knew she was going to see the devil.

I don't know what to make of Lucky Me, I don't want to take it to literal.

This doesn't really have anything to do with my interpretation of "The Score", but every time I hear the final verse "The fortune I made in gold," it always sounds to me like "The fortune I made in God." Even though its not the actual lyrics, I like the sound of that line..."the fortune I made in God." It has a nice, dark undertone to it.
For the ACTUAL song though, I have no clue as to what the implied metaphors are. I just sit there and enjoy the song.

As for Lucky Me, I agree with everyone else that it is fairly easy to interpret....unless the metaphors are metaphors in themselves, in which case, I'd be lost. But I'm guessing it's fairly straightforward hehe.
