wow, what a great album!

It seems to be going down even better than "Night Bugs". I like every song, but these would be my top favourites:

1. Your Wish Is My Wish...her most soulful song to date. stunning!
2. Out In The Park...kinda old Billy Joel, this song.
3. When Another Midnight...fiercely wonderful
4. the hidden track...Somebody's Arms? Is that what it's called? It doesn't sound like a Slean song. It should NOT be a hidden track, as this is easily a single and one of the best songs on the record

honorable mention: Day One, Vertigo, The Score

I thought I'd be lamenting the absence of "Everything By The Gallon" but I don't really care after hearing how great this record is...I think Sarah should do an album of 'scraps'--her scraps are better than most peoples' best: EBTG, Sadie, Ogoni Star...all the old songs and ones that didn't quite fit on any album. But then, I don't like the new lyrics to EBTG...something about "dear lips"...

My favourite song so far I think has to be 'Day One'. The only thing though is that there's not much to it after the second chorus. Seems like it's missing something. Also loving 'Mary'.

Somebody's Arms sounds like the New Deal. Maybe it's Dans produbing but it sounds a true fusion of Sarah and that band. I don't think anything is in the credits(book) for that one but it could be Darren on the drums. *looks into that*

When Another Midnight seems to have a flow/beat simular to UK hiphop/garage. I like it.

Vertigo reminds me of Portishead's Wandering Star.

But my faves are...
1. California
2. Mary
3. Lucky Me (Especially with the video and the old live version)

Cameron Bay.

i have not picked a favorite song yet. its the only thing ive been listening to for the past 2 days, but still...i need to listen over and over and over before i can come to any decisions. its almost like i need to know the song in entirety in order to know if i like it...to know it inside out.
i love the overall experience of listening to the cd...very nitty-gritty sounding at times....alot of dirty guitar. and rich harmonies (though i had a discussion and most of sarah's harmonies are more of counterpoints...love it!)
sat down with my friend, colleen (yes...we ahve the same name, both have red hair, both music students...we played a piano duet when i was like, 14 - she was 12) and i told her that she had to listen to some sarah - i told her on wednesday that i was buying the album later that day, and she said "whos sarah slean?" and i wanted to smack her!
so i gave her my discman, and let her listen while i ate my lunch and read a bit....20 minutes later, she took the ear phones out and said "I fricking love her!"

i laughed! it was so fitting! i knew shed love her!

i really like pilgrim, as well as the score. i really like the hidden track after wake up. it gives me the impression that sarah's riding her bike in the coutry, and letting her arms fly about her! a real "let go and have fun" flavor to it!

hmmm
ill post more when ive listened through a few more times

colleen~

My favorite song is definately "The Score". It is powerful and dynamic and beautiful. I was wondering about the secret song, was that only on certain releases, because I don't think that my copy has one.

Sarah Slean Rocks

That's such an interesting comparison. I would have never made it myself... even being a pretty big portishead fan.

Sidenote: did you know that Wandering Star was constructed over one of the verses in the book of Jude (in the Bible)?

It's got to be the scariest book in the Bible (aside from Revelations) and if you think about it, the verse she chose is probably the scariest of the book.

"Wandering Stars, for whom it is reserved, the blackest darkness forever."
Jude 1:12

In context, Jude is warning believers of the punishment immoral, disobedient people receive. Whoah.

you know, maybe that's the reason why it was put as a secret song, so it doesn't get into radio's hands and destroy her image.

and i laughed when [i:1680f654cc]somebody's arms[/i:1680f654cc] finished and thought to myself "wow, her hidden tracks are better than most artist's singles."

I love "Day One." I wonder if that will be Sarah's second single.

I'd put money on Day One as the next xingle. Thats if I gambled of course. I can't picture anything else even being a radio single except possible Out in the Park.

is it just me, or does "Mary" remind me of something Hawksley Workman would sing?

Ya know, I don't know what it is either... but both Mary and California remind me of something by Natalie Imbruglia. I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's just me.

Cheers.

Vertigo is a great song, and Pilgrim is wicked, I would have to say that those are my 2 fav.
