When I try to upload my own .gif file (yes, 80x80) for my avatar, it shows a bunch of weird error lines at the top of the page & shows up as a broken image, and it wont let me use the avatrs in the gallery either.

You need to host your own avatar. Your ISP should provide you with some webspace (Rogers gives you 10 megs, dunno about Bell) then you can upload it there and link it as you wish.

More people should have their own avatars...it gets a bit confusing when a bunch of people have the same imagae under their name. :P

I hosted my own avatar at photobucket, and still I got the dreaded Red X. So for now I've got a gallery one... but once I can figure out how to use my hosted image, I'm going to make it this:

I think that you can get a more frustrating situation when you join a forum and after updating your profile get "the little red x contained within the white box" for avatar! :x
But I simply read out all the post here and get stick with the wonberboy comment...and I got mine!

I've noticed a lot of people have bigger avatars than the 80x80 size the site says you need.

How do you do it? everytime I give it a pic larger than 80x80, it refuses to accept the pic.

As long as you host it offsite it doesn't limit you. If you wanted one the size of the entire screen you could do it (you'd piss off a LOT of people, but you could do it)
