Please don't consider it censorship... and nothing was inadvertently deleted. I was very systematic.
Any of the following types of threads were deleted: A) threads that were redundant (the same discussion was had in another thread and contained less than 3 posts) B) threads that were related to illegal content (I am working on getting a formal statement from Sarah in regards to bootlegs and live recordings) C) Completely off topic posts that did not create any discussion. The only other editing that was done... I added dates to the titles of the tourdate and interview threads. I don't plan on doing much censoring at all... unless it's in regard to live recordings or spambots. So far my only objective was to clean things up a bit. sorry if I stepped on a few toes in the process! ~NG |

A) people who accidentally ask a question that's already been asked are redundant, B) people who don't know Sarah doesn't like bootlegs are automatically deleted, and C) off-topic posts that don't generate discussion aren't allowed ????? I don't remember that being in the rules. :? ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

Not in the rules. I don't think a group like this needs rules.
I am more than happy to continue this discussion in a non-public arena should you choose. I was merely trying to clean things up. ~NG |

I think it's something that should be discussed publicly, actually. I agree that we don't need rules... but I also don't think we should have any posts deleted unless they are abusive... but that's just my two cents

i'd have to side 100% with Neal on this one.
No offence intended Nik, but one the most fundamental things that make a board like this successful is OPEN discussion. Monitored, sure. But open and free, definitely. The moment censorship rears its ugly head is the moment the board starts to die. And censorship is what it is. You can wrap it up in any sort of dressing you want, but arbitrary removal of posts based on one person's set of subjective criteria is censorship. Even if that one "person" is Slean. Everyone on this board knows how much i adore and respect her and of course this site is hers. But the discussions don't belong to her. The discussions belong to no one and/or anyone who participates. Personally, i'd be hard pressed to continue participation in a forum where I'd feel hesitant to speak freely lest someone find my comments objectionable. ...jim [i:53cc3dbc5d]there's good love out there, just you wait[/i:53cc3dbc5d] |

I stand firm in my conviction that I am not censoring. There was no subjectivity to it at all.
Many people have expressed the need for the past year for a responsible moderator. I don't like how I am having to take a defensive stance when the whole idea behind my being a moderator was to help make the board easier to use. I spent a day cleaning up the board, which involved the deletion of maybe a dozen threads. I won't be actively "censoring" (should you choose to use that word) unless something pressing comes to my attention, (ie: posts about bootlegs or spambots). I will continue as I have been the past half year as a lurker and tweek a few things as needed (moving posts if they better fit in a different area, etc). I think both of you are over-reacting. I know that you both know I am not a threat to the freedom of expression on this board. ~Nicole G |

I don't think you're a threat. I'm not sure much could threaten this board.
I doubt, however, that it was only "a dozen or so" threads -- personally, my posts/day count dropped from just over 5 to around 4.68. That amounts to an average of 0.32 posts of mine per day I've been a member, which is around 542 days (yay for excel!)... or ~175 posts. That's a LOT, especially considering it's only my posts. No one is questioning the need for for a 'responsible' moderator who ensures that only registered users are able to post, that spambots are deleted and blocked asap, and that those discussing content Sarah and the owners of this board are opposed to are fairly warned and notified. But the deletion of posts deemed irrelevant or unimportant enough to stay here (such as the one Matthew mentioned above) goes too far in my books. But, what's done is done, and I would hope that going forward it won't happen again. ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |
