... we're watching tv last night and happen to flip past entertainment tonight where they're doing a story on tom & katie and their impending parenthood (terrifying, by the way). anyway, then mary hart says something that i'm sure i must have heard wrong, but we've all heard the same thing. she says "tom and katie have announced that katie is 3 months pregnant, and will be delivering the baby without pain killers because tom is a
scientologist."

COME AGAIN??? okay i knew the guy was a freak but what in god's name??? who WANTS their wife to be in excruciating pain? and SHE'S not using drugs because HE'S a scientologist? did i miss something? if she needs a c-section does that "rule" still apply? unbelievable. but it gets worse. the delivery will be a scientology ritual known as "silent birth" in which the woman cannot scream or cry out while delivering, because the baby must come into "a world of total silence, peace and tranquility." WHAT THE?!?!?! don't show pain??? do scientologists not realize that a baby is much larger than a vagina? these people are totally whacked. i'm so disappointed in katie because she's much dumber than i ever imagined. all i can say is that i [i:51be62cce3]really[/i:51be62cce3] hope she doesn't have postpartum...

Poor Katie.

She's screwed.

my ex gave birth to all three of our kids with no painkillers whatsover.

HER choice, not mine. Hell, I needed the damn things.

I can tell you one thing for sure though, there was nothing silent about it....

mind you, there wasn't much silent about the conception either. :P

Yes, I will admit, I bought a t-shirt. A bright pink/salmon one. I can't find any picture of myself wearing it though Red Faceops:

Apparently they've also come up with a "Free Baby" line of clothing too lol

I just saw something on TV about how Tony Danza (yeah, Tony) was slamming Tom for his baby news. He talked about how Tom verbally attacked Brooke Shields over her use of medication to overcome depression, yet at the same time is advocating having children before being married and how it seemed that Tom didn't really have any place to talk about Brooke not being a proper role model. I think Tom is passed his prime by about 10 years.

Hmm... I can almost see the psychological effects based on John Travolta's quote -- essentially if the child associates pain with its mother's screams, or with certain words even, it will then associate pain/trauma with such sounds in future. Of course I've never taken a psychology course so that could be completely bunk...

It still seems just... soooo wrong though. How do you expect a woman to give birth to a child a) without painkillers AND b) completely silently. One or the other, maybe... I mean even before we had the drugs, I'm sure there were very few women completely able to go through that without making at least a little bit of noise!!!

My mother didn't have any pain killers, but I'm sure it was [i:e65b2bee11]not[/i:e65b2bee11] silent, and I'm totally sane! Okay, nevermind... bad example...

My mum delivered both me and my brother without painkillers. It's not a big deal, most deliveries here are done without painkillers. It's only natural. Although if Katie wants painkillers, she should get them. Tom should have no say in this whatsoever; he's not the one pushing out the baby.

Without noise, however... that's so messed up.

from what i recall, nicole and tom adopted for medical reasons.

tom is whacked. i remember watching that interview with matt lauer and hearing him slam psychiatry and call it a "pseudoscience" (as opposed to scientology which isn't a pseudoreligion at all...) but at the time i didn't know that nicole kidman's dad is a psychiatrist! unbelievable! to go on national tv and slam your ex-father-in-law's profession! i swear, that guy has a [i:b39b85ec12]serious[/i:b39b85ec12] problem.

Actually when they adopted the child they demanded the same of its mother as well. In other words, this poor surrogate mother had to go through drug-free noise-free labour as well.

^ ^ ^ Me wearing the Free Katie shirt. "Katie" is cut off a bit, but you get the point.

Apparently Tom is old fashioned. He doesn't want the baby to be born out of wedlock....yet he's not old fashioned enough to let Katie make noise while giving birth..

Isn't the point of being "old-fashioned" to not have SEX out of wedlock? like, aren't the rushed marriages usually an attempt to make it as un-apparent as possible that that happened? I mean I'm personally all in favour of pre-marital sex, but it seems a little hypocritical to insist on a shotgun wedding for 'old fashioned values' reasons... oy. Perhaps my Free Katie shirt needs to make another appearance lol
