Hey everyone!
I don't know if there are any Fiona Apple fans on these boards, but I just wanted to alert everyone to a campaign against the shelving of her third recording effort. You can sign the petition and get more information here: FREE FIONA!!! So whatchoowaitingfor? Sign it, lover! [b:bec53e3d3c]P.S.[/b:bec53e3d3c] I hope I am allowed to do it. lipos(ed)uction |

I don't get it. Why would anyone want their album distributed by someone who doesn't want to. I'm willing to bet sony has some idea of what sells and what doesn't. They obviously believe that this album wouldn't. If she cared that much about her music she'd ship it around to other labels wouldn't she? Or would that be breaking contracts?
|
||||
|
^^
CHances are Sony owns the rights. That's usually what happens. That happened to the Backstreet Boys when they sued their record label to get out of a contract, they lost an entire album because their old label already owned all the rights to it. Sucks don't it? ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

I agree with Sweet One. And also, she probably cannot start work on another album because that could be one of the contractual obligations built into the agreement. She might be obligated to release a certain number of records under Sony that must be to their liking.
So, basically, unless Fiona sings R'n'B ballads, the Apple machine may be stalled. But that's just one theory. |

I signed this a while back ago. I'm a huge Fiona Apple fan and I'm very disappointed at the way Sony has decided to handle the situation.

I find that this seems to be a common thread with record companies in the U.S. They are too busy trying to promote manufactured acts with little to know talent simply because they can fill out a tube top. Real musicians tend to take a back seat, regardless of how talented they may be. I wish we could start a petition to bring real music back. Who's with me?

Count me in! Although I have to say, big mean record companies aside, there [i:543d708153][b:543d708153]IS [/b:543d708153][/i:543d708153]good music out there, its just that [i:543d708153][b:543d708153]WE [/b:543d708153][/i:543d708153]have to spend a little time finding it. Which, frankly, is probably a good thing. ...jim [i:53cc3dbc5d]there's good love out there, just you wait[/i:53cc3dbc5d] |

I think "real" music eventually finds its way out, anyway. I think we owe that to the age we live in. Case in point: Fiona Apple's new CD, "Extraordinary Machine," has been leaked onto the Internet. Several radio stations took it upon themselves to play every song on the CD, and dedicated fans took the time to tape the songs and release them to the Internet. The music hasn't been released yet, but that's one step towards squeezing "real" music out from the choke-hold of bureaucracy. |

So has anyone heard Extraordinary Machine? I downloaded it, but, heck, I would buy it this instant. Sony are either nuts or maybe they are using this as a clever marketing ploy? In any case, the album is just fucking fantastic. I've not heard her previous work, so I don't know how it compares. But this is just a stunner.

You've never heard Criminal? Or any of When The Pawn...?

No. I know Tidal was big, but I've never bothered to check her out. Well, actually I downloaded both albums a couple of weeks ago, and I have listened to a few songs, including "Criminal". I have to say there is nothing I've heard so far that I like nearly as much as anything off Extraordinary Machine. |

Hmm... well I dont' own any of her albums, but now I'd be interested to hear this suppressed album!

Well, if you are interested, I could, *ahem*, send you some stuff over messenger or whatever. It is also available on Soulseek and BitTorrent, if you use either. |

don't use either... but my MSN is in the MSN thread.

Well, the album's now out, and so is the truth.
http://www.mtv.com/bands/a/apple_fiona/news_feature_100305/ Apparently it wasn't Sony that quit, it was Fiona. Interesting. And a pretty good read if you have a few minutes I haven't got the album yet... what does everyone think of it that has it? ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |
