Here's my moral dilemma... actually my friend's moral dilemma.

In Mexico, you can add money to your cell phones in the supermarket by giving them your phone number. Today, Susanne did that.

She got back to her office and saw that no money had been added to her phone, even a few hours later. She checked her receipt and the money had been added to another phone number... almost the same except one of the 4s was a 0.

She and I went back to the Supermarket to get it fixed. The woman dug through her trash can to find the paper that susanne had written her phone number on because the woman swore that the 4 looked like a zero. Turns out, it [i:44b015c83f]kind of[/i:44b015c83f] looked like a zero.

The woman informed us that the approx $20 would come out of her salary because it was her mistake.

At first, we thought, well... it was this woman's fault, it's susanne's right to get her money back. But then, minimum wage in mexico is $4.50... A DAY. This could potentially be 4 days pay to this woman. She has to work 4 days for something that we work less than a 1/4 of a day for.

I suggested the 2 of them pay half. The woman wouldn't hear of it. She said it was her mistake. But you could just see in her eyes it is going to hurt.

Susanne is going back tomorrow to straighten it out. What should she do?

While its not her fault that the supermarket makes their employees pay for their mistakes, it is also not the woman's fault that she lives in a country that doesn't protect her from her employer exploiting her.

Why can't they take the $20 OFF of the other person's account and then apply it to her's? That's what I don't get.

If it were me, I wouldn't let the woman who was working pay for it, that's a harsh penalty for something so minor.

neal: It's no longer in the hands of the supermarket by that point. The credits have been put on the phone. They don't have the access to remove them.

bw: but so should susanne have to pay for the mistake then? (impending marriage means she's also counting her pennies)

that's true, your friend shouldn't have to pay for the mistake either...what I don't get is why anyone has to pay for it. It was an accident, just credit your friend for the amount and that's it. I guess here in Canada and the U.S. we just expect things to work out in favour of all those involved...something we probably take more for granted than we know.

Well it doesn't sound like it's really the woman's fault if she misread a number that wasn't written clearly, does it? Not that I believe your friend should also have to pay for it either. But it's not a very safe system they got going on at that supermarket to be honest. I don't think I'd give my number out to a stranger like that even if it's just adding credits to my phone account. It should be something that's handled between the individual and the phone company just to avoid any privacy issues.

Cheers.

good points gentlemen...

to joel: yes, it sucks that mexico allows it's people to be exploited. I so much more appreciate the laws we have in place that not only protect the customer, but also the employee.

clem: well, I mean, it still looked like a 4 but we could sort of admit how she might have mistook it for a zero. But she should have at least asked if it looked ambiguous to her... and the woman even said so. As for the supermarkets... you can pay/buy just about anything there. Bills, phone cards, alcohol, over the counter drugs (that you never need a prescription for)... you name it.

Sounds like the stores here are becoming.... They haven't launched it yet but the Loblaws/Fortinos/Zehrs chain here is launching PC Mobile. *shudder*.

It sounds like this is a lose-lose situation... either your friend loses her $20, or the girl loses her $20. You should boycott the store on the grounds that they're morons who can't re-assign the mistaken balance assignment. If I did that at a cell phone company here they'd have it taken care of in a minute (or a year... but still, it'd get taken care of).
