i was disappointed with more albums in '05 than i loved, after being enamored with so many in 2004. the biggest disappointments for me were Extraordinary Machine and Aerial, and i was also underwhelmed by Wallflower. while it was far from her best, there was still something enchanting for me in Tori's The Beekeeper that i didn't get in the aforementioned discs. Amos Lee made a beautiful record, as did James Blunt and Glen Phillips, and i must say that i truly loved Jagged Little Pill Acoustic. a lot of the CDs i dug this year were by indie artists. i would definitely encourage folks to check out Amoraphobe by Harmony Trowbridge, Out Here At Sea by Karen Kosowski and Hearts Fall by Karyn Ellis.

i don't believe that Hotel Rwanda had its wide release until six weeks before the Oscars so to me it was easily as the best film of the year. i also give huge props to Pride & Prejudice which was absolutely pristine, and Hustle & Flow which blew me away and had one of the best soundtracks i have ever heard in a film. i still haven't seen Crash (which i can't believe), but i'm definitely renting it this week because i'm sure it'll affect me deeply. Good Night And Good Luck, Walk The Line and Syriana are also at the top of my list of things to get to. i just saw Brokeback Mountain and found it really, really overrated. while there's no denying the social importance of the movie and i applaud Ang Lee for taking it on, i just didn't find it to be particularly engaging. to me it was much more of a lust story than a love story, which belied the whole point of the film. i was dying to see some heart, some true emotion and deep connection and soul revelation between these characters. meeting a few times a year for sex romps does not the love-of-your-life make. just my opinion.

it's very interesting how people who share certain tastes can have perceptions that are so contrary sometimes. i found Sarah's April show to be miles, light years even, better than her december show. i remember feeling so full at the Phoenix, so captivated, so inspired, that i came home and wrote two songs. it stayed with me for days. when i left the Harbourfront show, i was on to the next thing within half an hour. even though the show was technically excellent, there was just a huge emotional divide for me and a complete disconnect when it was over. it's kool to see though that others experienced it so differently and were moved by something that left me pretty cold. part of the beauty of subjectivity i guess.

Hehe. On that note, it's quite interesting that reading your post through, I think that I had the exact opposite impression than you did on a number of things.
I thought JLPA was one of Alanis' worst albums, with the exceptions of a couple of strong songs (Perfect and Mary Jane)... and Extraordinary Machine was, for me, a highlight. But as you say, subjectivity is a beautiful thing Smiler
The one agreement I did have with you was Brokeback Mountain... I was really on the fence about this after seeing it. It got a lot of hype, and while I'm glad that someone had the guts to make a mainstream movie with a man-cheating-on-their-wives-with-other-men storyline (because it's a real one... more so in the 60s/70s but even still now), it wasn't quite as good as everyone said it was. I haven't read the original short story but after watching the movie, I want to... Looking beyond the story though, the acting was spotty (there were some really good points, but a lot of not-so-good ones), the editing was terrible which made the movie really choppy, and something about the overall movie just didn't seem... believable. I mean let's face it, no sex is that good, and I'm not sure I was convinced they were in love.

On that note... I didn't see many movies in 2005 (probably not even enough to COMPLETE a top 10 list), but here goes my concert/album list:

[i:a01ca081cc][b:a01ca081cc]Concerts[/b:a01ca081cc]
OK, I couldn't stick to ten. I went with 15[/i:a01ca081cc]

1. Hillside. All of it.
2. Sarah Slean - H.B. Beal S.S. in London
3. The Bluebird North series - Hamilton and Toronto in February, Toronto in November
4. Sarah Slean - Buffalo Icon Nightclub
5. Sarah Slean - Harbourfront Centre (both nights)
6. Shaye - Showplace Peterborough (November)
7. Toronto Symphony Orchestra - don't remember the date but their performance of Bolero was... stunning. I'm still in awe.
8. Avril Lavigne - Copps Coliseum (July)
9. Cyndi Lauper - Massey Hall (December)
10. Jann Arden - Massey Hall (November)
11. Festival of Friends Hamilton
12. Andy Kim Xmas Show (I love you Andy Kim!!!) (inside joke lol)
13. David Usher - Toronto Pride
14. Sarah Harmer - at united church whose name escapes me in Hamilton
15. KidsOnTV - Diverscit (Montreal)

[b:a01ca081cc][i:a01ca081cc]Albums[/b:a01ca081cc][/i:a01ca081cc]
1. Anna Nalick - Wreck of the Day
2. Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
3. Madonna - Confessions on a Dance Floor
4. Esthero - Wikked Lil' Grrrls
5. Dala - Angels & Thieves
6. Luke Doucet - Broken (and other rogue states)
7. Rent - Movie Soundtrack

ah yes, i forgot Confessions On A Dance Floor. it is great! really, really good. i'm very confounded by people's reactions in general to JLPA, especially to Hand In My Pocket which i found, bar none, to be the most inspired track on that record. the new arrangement was so beautiful, more like a completely reinterpreted cover than any other song on it, and yet it was panned. the first time i heard it my eyes welled up. i also loved what she did with Perfect and Not The Doctor, and the new version of Our House with the piano was gorgeous. i won't get into my feelings on Extraordinary Machine, other than just to say that melody lines are kind of crucial to songs...

so nice to see a TSO concert on a top 10 show list! i used to work for RTH so i was fortunate enough to see some stellar performances by them. i wasn't able to see Bolero but i can just imagine how awesome it must have been.

but i so hear you on Brokeback Mountain. i don't believe they were in love at all. they were in heat. it bothered me because gay man have forever been fighting the stereotype that their relationships are all about sex, and this movie did nothing but perpetuate that. after i saw it i couldn't believe that Heath Ledger is getting Oscar buzz?!?!?! uh, for what? that grunt-like manner of speech he came up with left a lot to be desired. i actually thought that Jake was better. for me, the best part of that movie by far was Michelle Williams. she was the only thing that came close to stirring anything in me.

Sounds like fun, nice topic Jim. I'm more of a film than a music person so I'll stick to a top 10 in movies (counting only movies I saw in theatres in 2005):

2. Un Long Dimanche Des Fianailles (France, Jean Pierre Jeunet)
3. Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (South Korea, Park Chan Wook)
4. March of the Penguins
5. 2046 (Hong Kong, Wong Kar Wai)
6. Crash
7. Batman Begins
8. Sin City
9. Save the Green Planet (South Korea)
10. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

Biggest disapointment - Memoirs of a Geisha

It was. It was part of a French composers themed evening -- I get a "Light Classics" subscription every year now and I'm loving it. I normally don't find out what specific pieces they're playing 'til the night of (I like it to be a surprise... and the title on the ticket is usually pretty vague) and I was overjoyed to see that they were featuring two of Ravel's pieces that night. They had a guest saxophone player, I can't remember who it was now, but the whole thing was just astounding. Oh look at me, I'm still gushing!! I could go on and on..

Also, I just got in from seeing Transamerica and it was SUPERB. I couldn't get out of my seat for a couple of minutes after it ended because I was just so involved in the story and really moved by the whole thing. I'm not sure if it's playing anywhere outside of Toronto (or like... NYC/LA/etc.) at the moment but if you get a chance, go see it! Technically it came out last year, so I'm making it my #1 movie of 2005 lol.

and i forgot to put Everybody Loves Chris on my fave tv show list. absolutely fabulous.
