Well, technically it's today (hahah!), but this would be an understandable mistake to make considering the circumstances! Yay! |

more now!
the band consisted of a double bass player, a drum and glockenspiel player (yes, simultaneously) and a guitar player, and sometimes Royal Wood. The band took the stage first, then Sarah tiptoed her way out in a short poofy purple dress. "I wore my party dress for you!" i didnt keep up with the setlist like i usually do, but i knew i wouldnt, what with the new songs and all, and being too busy just looking at the stage, but here's what I got: 1. Hopeful Hearts 2. Eliot 3. Get Home - "this is for every cheater you know" 4. Notes from the Underground - "Here's a song inspired by Dostoevsky. When I first moved to France, I had one friend...." something about her finding herself becoming very neurotic, and that her friend was an artist, and she finds out that he's just as neurotic, and they drove each other crazier. Then she throws up 5. Euphoria. Something about how you need to write a dirty song like this in your twentys, even though she's in her thirties. "And your mother goes, '..what does that line mean?....WAIT, dont tell me!'" she then gets up from her piano bench, moves to the centre of the stage and picks up the mic. ("I have a small community living under my dress!") "new ways to sing old favourites" and so the band backed her while she was able to dance and move around, and man did she ever! 6. Lucky Me *shifty eyes* "you didnt tell me she was weeeird!" 7. When Another Midnight (yeah, you heard right!) needless to say, this was totally awesome. I would have paid the full price for the ticket just to see these two songs performed like this. Wow! and you gotta love her theatrics then back to the piano "hm...now that we've got the freak out of the way..." then it gets hazy from there on, but here are the songs she played (that i remember), sort of in order but i cant be sure -Please be good to me ("here's a song i hope Dolly Parton will sing one day") -goodnight trouble -california -sound of water ("anybody got a string quartet in their purse?") -so many miles -out in the park -looking for someone. Apparently she gets more emails about this song than she's ever gotten for any other songs Encore: 1. Butterfly "this is one of my favourite songs. I first played this song at my very first show, with 20 people...in a college bar. I all the girls into the girls washroom and played them this song on my guitar, and everybody went *scared look* whispers 'she's a freak!'" 2. Universe "I wrote this song naked...lying on my back, in a lake, when i was 17" "more songs should be written naked" 3. Parasol "I couldnt find the question to the answer...er what am i saying, i couldnt find the answer to the question...'why does no one in France SMILE at meeeee? =(' Being here, in Canada, you dont realise what a cultural norm it is, for people to smile at each other! Even people...riding bikes...with BAGUETTES wouldnt even look at me!" 4. Wake Up "it's getting warm in here!" (referring to her dress) ("TAKE IT OFF!") "so that's how they roll in Vancouver!" The thing about playing with a band, is that the set is pretty much written, so there isnt really any room at all for requests. And there were none from the audience, except for this one person in the balcony, who asked for Climbing up the Walls to which Sarah quickly said no. hahaha. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Sarah has a new poetry book out, also titled The Baroness. It was weird, i didnt even find out about it until i saw it at the merch table This message has been edited. Last edited by: Vito, |

Ahahahh!
I like your review, especially the little quotes everywhere which seriously are making me laugh out loud. I'm not very good with writing reviews, so I'm just going to add some notes here and there from what I remember/thought: Shoes: She had shoes on, but that only lasted through the first song. Lucky Me & When Another Midnight: Just to expand a bit, these were Jazz Trio-ey (probably wrong use of terminology here, maybe swing?) type interpretations. She seemed to have much fun with singing these! Butterfly: SHE PLAYED BUTTERFLY OHMIGOSH! I think my heart almost attacked itself when I realized this song was coming up. Has she performed this song more than that one time in the ladies' washroom? Wake Up: Sarah wandered into the crowd for this one, and sang it solo without any instrumental accompaniament except for the audience who filled in the Woah Woah's. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, but thought perhaps it was a bit short? (maybe I'm just spoiled from the previous solo tour though). Understandably, the focus was on the new album, with little bits of her older work embedded throughout. I think I also prefer the solo piano format vs. her with the band, but again that's just my oppinion. And a congratulations for getting through without playing Sweet Ones! "I don't know about that guy, he seems too familliar" - Sarah referring to the technical person stomping around onstage and fiddling with cords just behind her. P.S. Did anyone else think that Royal Wood's voice evoked impressions of Ron Sexsmith in disguise? |
you know, i also prefer the solo shows, but this was interesting nonetheless. It also seemed that the band was essential to her playing the new songs. and i guess we really have been spoiled from the previous tours, becuase counting what i listed, that's 18 songs already! EIGHTEEN!
also, she had the band backing her during Wake Up and i think she's played Butterfly quite a couple of times, but never recently where were you seated, Normal? i'm thinking i need to bring a camera tonight, but i also dont think i'd care enough to take pictures and watch the show at the same time |
Oh man! Maybe it wasn't a short show then! (I should really wear a watch or something). And yeah, you probably are right about Wake Up. I think I might have been a wee bit distracted by the beautiful young woman standing barefoot in the middle of the room singing and directing harmonies. I was in the second row on the right, about halfway in. Did you manage to acquire sufficiently pleasing seating for the show? |
yes i did! i managed to get there at a decent time, but many seats were already saved, so i managed 3rd or 4th row on the left side, 3 seats from the centre aisle. I'm gonna be there earlier tonight, though, so i'm gonna aim for second row center

Oh I'm so excited... Universe! And Butterfly! I hope she does the same setlist; I assume she would...
See all you Vancouverites tonight! [[Scale heartless and weep, fighters. The battle is yours to lose.]] |

Surprised you didn't get Sound of Water. It does have a bit of a When Another Midnight sound. Been a long time since she did that one standing with the band playing. Look forward to hearing this mix although her piano version won me over. I got lost with what you were saying about Butterfly. Did she play this song at the piano? Last time I know of her playing it Sarah played the guitar. That's quite the visual of Sarah writing Universe. Not in that 'barely legal' way but in that artistic/nature sense. Can you take a photo of the book cover? I would like to make a littleslean.com entry on it. Cameron |

we did. oh wait, you meant without the piano?
oh, yes she did play it on the guitar. What i wrote up there was all in quotes, so it was Sarah who said all that |
Thanks for the review!!! I am super excited but alas have to wait until May 23 for the Toronto show.
It would be great if people could keep track of the setlist as she travels across the country. ~Love me for stupid reasons, I like those most~ |

oops, missed Sound of Water in the set list.
