Sarah Slean, de passage dans la ville de Moncton au Manhattan jeudi le 7 avril dans le cadre d'une tourn�e canadienne, monte sur la sc�ne presque en courant, les pieds nus. Elle est tout simplement inoubliable : svelte, le visage mince et les yeux p�tillants, elle d�gage une �nergie et une chaleur des plus surprenantes. Ses longues mains de pianiste ex�cutent des mouvements toujours gracieux, que ce soit en touchant les cl�s du clavier ou �loignant ses cheveux de sa figure lorsqu'elle parle � son public. Sarah Slean est une jeune canadienne originaire de Toronto, qui n'a d�finitivement pas peur de dire ce qu'elle pense. Sur sc�ne, elle n'a aucunement besoin d'un groupe pour consolider sa pr�sence ; elle occupe d�j� toute la place. Sa forte personnalit� ressort � tout moment ; elle est parfois franchement dr�le, et le reste du temps tr�s touchante. Il est difficile de d�finir son style : sa voix rappelle sensiblement celle de Gwen Stefani, et on pr�tend que son genre s'apparente � celui de Tori Amos, bien qu'il devient �vident, apr�s l'avoir vue en spectacle, qu'elle poss�de un charme tout � fait unique et que son style musical est l'amalgame de bien des genres.

Jeudi dernier, elle nous a pr�sent� des chansons de son quatri�me album, intitul� Day One. Auteure-compositeure-interpr�te, elle dit avoir puis� l'inspiration pour ce plus r�cent album dans la solitude d'une petite cabine au fond des bois. L'album est con�u et cr�� enti�rement par la jeune canadienne de 27 ans, qui a aussi sign� les peintures qui figurent sur le dessus de celui-ci ainsi qu'� l'int�rieur du livret. En effet, il lui arrive r�guli�rement de peindre et de dessiner, mais elle affirme que la composition et la peinture, pour elle, sont deux arts tout � fait s�par�s et que son inspiration pour l'un ou pour l'autre de ces arts ne lui parvient jamais de fa�on simultan�e.

Pour quelqu'un qui ignorait l'existence de Slean avant de la voir en spectacle, son album peut para�tre quelque peu d�cevant, puisque ses compositions prennent toute leur richesse dans l'atmosph�re singuli�re du piano et de la chanteuse, seuls. Le guitariste qui accompagnait la jeune chanteuse ne prenait que tr�s peu de place et n'�tait pas pr�sent durant tout le spectacle. � l'inverse, l'album laisse la place � un groupe musical complet pour pr�s de la moiti� des chansons. Automatiquement, une atmosph�re pop s'en d�gage.

Bien que l'�coute des chansons de son album ne se compare nullement et en aucun aspect au spectacle qu'elle a offert � son modeste auditoire du Manhattan, l'album Day One reste solide et d�lectable. Sarah Slean est une artiste qui m�rite qu'on l'encourage; elle nous rappelle que, malgr� toute l'�nergie que la t�l�vision am�ricaine met � nous convaincre du contraire, le talent musical existe encore.
