The Article
My translation: Sarah Slean needed to take a retreat, in a cabin in the north of Ottawa, in order to write Day One. For her to continue her career as a singer and pianist, it was necessary, initially, to find a new direction for her life. When she made the decision to take refuge far from everything, Sarah Slean was in a bad place. "I no longer knew where I came from, and I wasnt sure if I wanted to make music anymore. I was at a crossroads, I didnt know more how to give direction to my life, to give it a sense of nobility. I felt like it was useless", tells the singer and pianist. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, Sarah took time to reflect, to question herself about the direction her life was taking, and the career she had chosen. She read, but especially took time to live and create: "The first few weeks were torture! I was painfully alone and I drank too much. When you are alone with yourself, you are forced to face your inner demons. Then you realize at which point you are to act according to the past or to the future, instead of concentrating on the present", the nominee for adult alternate the Album category of the year at the Juno awards last Sunday replied. The experience of loneliness was worth it, however great the sorrow, since it enabled her to become aware of an essential part of her life: her piano. "Before leaving, I almost gave away everything that I owned, except my piano. Then one morning, I had an epiphany, I understood the importance of music in my life. My career choice seemed noble again", explains the artist. It was in that moment that the songs from Day One, her fourth album, started to take form, so that on her return to Toronto, 18 weeks after her departure, Sarah was ready to record them under the supervision of the producers Pete Prilesnick (Sarah Harmer) and Dan Kurtz (of the group The New Deal). The result is a collection of engaging and personal songs. Sarah is very pleased with the reaction from her fans: "I cant say that I have revolutionized anything, but I have receive many emails on behalf of people who have told me they have been inspired to write, to paint or to do something with their life after having heard Day One. It is all that I need to intend to continue", Sarah replies, enthusiastically. Painting and writing are two additional, essential catalysts to her creativity. You can see her works on her official site (www.sarahslean.com), and also in the booklet of Day One. A clip of the title song, animated by Nelson Chen (Odd Job Jack, as seen on the Comedy Network), displays her colorful whimiscal imagination. "painting and music come from the same inspiration, but they are different sides of the same coin. Painting enables me to express my calm and solitary side, while music is loud and festive. This is why, after several weeks of touring, I am always happy to find calm in painting", concludes Sarah Slean, who will expose her art for the first time this summer in Toronto. (oi, now my brain hurts. excuse my poor translation in some parts. I kept thinking in Spanish... man my French is getting rusty. and whats this about Nelson Chan and the Comedy Network?) |
