David Myles Spending Quality Time With Jill Barber And Sarah Slean

David Myles, an unassuming multi-instrumentalist from Fredericton, New Brunswick, has spit-polished his musicianship and released a sophomore disc dubbed Things Have Changed.

Myles rounded up a handful of the east coast's most venerated players — including Jill Barber, Dale Murray, Matt Murphy and Gabe Minnikin — to lend their talents to the album, which was produced by former Superfriendz member Charles Austin.

"It just seems like my kind of calling," says Myles, battling a touch of a cold, in between small sips of herbal tea at Halifax's Trident Cafe. "I still think of myself as a folk musician, even though it's not folk music.

"I guess I want to resonate with average folk. I want to play in small towns as much as I want to play in big towns."

For a fella who started taking piano lessons in grade one, but quit two years later to pick up the trumpet, who performed in a blues band while living in China, and who played his first solo gig while working at the legislature in Toronto, he seems to be on the right track. Things Have Changed embodies the breezy, carefree sounds of Jack Johnson, the intricate craftsmanship of Paul Simon and the artful temperament of Josh Ritter.

"I've been writing songs for about four years," Myles says. "I lived in China for a year while I was in university, and that's when I started. I played trumpet for years, then I bought a guitar and started writing songs while I was there."

Myles and Barber have been riding each other's coattails recently, as Barber lent her charming vocals to his album and Myles sits in on trumpet for her when he can. His brief Maritime tour that starts this week will reach its peak when he opens for cabaret crooner Sarah Slean at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax and The Playhouse in his hometown.

"It's going to be a mix between extremely intimate and extremely big for me," Myles says. "Both of us are playing solo.

"I've never seen her play live. I'm really excited. I've been listening to her album for the last little while. She has solid musicianship, she knows her way around, and she does all of these amazing arrangements on her albums. The strings and horns are really, really good."

Myles has been nominated for best new/emerging artist at this year's Canadian Folk Music Awards. It seems that the slender, modest, dexterous musician has veered off course from his political science degree, only to blissfully settle into his artistic pursuits.

He's a male Sarah! Perfect. People underestimate, sometimes, how much their opening act sets the tone in the audience for the evening. It can be a hard hole to dig out of. When I saw Sarah in Calgary last September, a guy called Chad Vangaalen opened for her. He played a guitar, a drum, and at one point, a wind-up musical duck (!). A couple of good songs, but for the most part, excruciating. I ran up to the stage and gave Sarah a long thank-you squeeze when she finally came on. Inside, anyway

Lady, I agree.

I know with Chad Vangaalen things sounded a bit last minute. He didn't meet Sarah for the first show and I don't think he stuck around to hear her play. He stated he didnt feel prepared for a sit down audience.

I know when lable mate Tomi Swick openned for Sarah she wasn't familuar with his work and had her doubts. He won her over.

Sarah has caught some breaks openning for Ron Sexsmith, Buck 65, Blue Rodeo, etc
