When you find Norah Jones too sweet, PJ Harvey too "left of centre" (literally diagonal, but I'm guessing this is what they mean) and Tori Amos too "transfigured", but you like the three of them none the less, you will certainly love Sarah Slean.

PS I wonder if any of us ever imagined Sarah being featured in "Elle"!

Enough of new Singer/Songwriterinnen? Not of this!!!, 11 April 2005

Which artist may be compared it already gladly with other (more famous) colleagues. Probably not many. Thus it will not be able to hear Sarah Slean just as probably meanwhile already nearly any longer: This comparison with tori Amos. The similarities actually are superficially regarded also obvious: Delicate Mrs., which piano, who thoughtful, entrueckten, melancholischen Songs... But so the thing becomes also again not simple on the second view. Sarahs voice is on the one hand not like that clear and, but a little more rauchiger, nearly already more rockiger. The piano of the kanadierin is besides by far not as dominant as with tori Amos. It subordinates itself rather equally, into a whole from guitars, Streichern, various guest instruments, schlagzeug and evenly piano. And during with Mrs. Amos some pieces occasionally nearly a little too verkopft, bulkily and inaccessible, keep themselves Sarah Slean one - in the positive sense - work certain Popappeal and much a freedom of movement without assistance of commercial concessions on the Charts to squint completely.
The best Songs on "Day One" is "Pilgrim" - with its brittle and dark Indie charm and the heavy Streichern, "Mary" - a beautiful Ballade with spherical sound surfaces and a fantastic melody, the piece of title of "Day One" - a playful and impudent number with absolute Ohrwurm Refrain, as well as the low-sad and moving "Vertigo". All in all Sarah Slean offers a varied mixture from tenderly poppig to stubbornly rockig, of cheerfully to cloudy, always independently and fastidiously and far away from 08/15-Radio-Massenware. Sarah Slean is more genuinly secrettaps. Hopefully it does not remain thereby!!!

My GOD that is entertaining to read, although I did like this line:

Hmmm... Well, it's an interesting analogy I suppose. These German reviews use such interesting words, I really love it. Even if something is just lost in translation, it's so flowery and metaphoric.
