And the fan review from amazon.de. Some loose translations, but I think I got the gist of it.
[b:328ac42bd7]Tired of new singer/songwriters? Not from this one![/b:328ac42bd7] What artist likes to be compared to other (more famous) colleagues? Probably not a lot of them. By now Sarah Slean is probably tired of always being compared to Tori Amos. The similarities on the surface are obvious: the graceful lady, the piano, the reflective, removed and melancholic songs... But on second look, the case isn't all that simple. Sarah's voice is not as clear and angelic, but a but more smoky, almost rockier. The Canadian's piano is by far not as dominant as it is with Tori. It's more filed away underneath guitars, strings and several guest instruments, drums and some piano. And while Mrs Amos' music can be a bit bulky and inaccesible, Sarah Slean always holds a certain Pop appeal (in a positive way), and accesability without the help of commercial concessions to storm the charts. The best songs on "Day One" are "Pilgrim" - with it's brittle and gloomy Indie charm and the heavy strings, "Mary" - a wonderful ballad with spherical spaces and a truly dreamy melody, title song "Day One" - a "lost and impudent" (?) song with a real Earwurm refrain, just like the deeply sad and gripping "Vertigo". All together Sarah Slean offers a varied mix of delicate pop to obstinate rock, from cheerful to cloudy, always independent and demanding and far removed from the Radio masses. Sarah Slean is a secret tip, and hopefully she will become even more! |

Awesome. Such a positive review too!!
What's 'earwurm'? ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

Oops, I thought earwurm was an actual English word... Apparently not. An earwurm is a little bug that's said to crawl in your ears (probably not true). By calling the refrain an earwurm they mean it will really 'crawl in your ear' and stick there.

A little google search brought up more German reviews.
http://www1.ndr2.de/pages_std_lib/0,3325,OID1226606_REF6962,00.html "Lucky Me" is the name of the track that you might have heard on NDR2 recently. A very rhytmic, guitarheavy track, that presents a complete picture of the singer - Sarah Slean - her unusual songwriting, that consists of 'oblique' drums and a melody to fall in love with. And when comparisons with Tori Amos or Fiona Apple keep getting shoved in your face, you can still draw a better parallel to Gwen Stefani, who isn't afraid of packing every possible genre into one song either. You can also find this similarity in the vocals. The 26 year old musician has certainly deserved her increasing succes. In her youth she already started making contact with musicians in Toronto. In 1999 she released her first album "Sarah Slean". She's from an area of classical music, and has also received a classical piano training. Maybe it's this training that brings her to write more melodic songs, that are more touching than jolly, and have brought her the genre mentioned above. It's rather hard finding a category for the multicoloured potpourri of "Day One". At times the rock leans forward to make your ears wobble, like on her first single "Lucky Me", for which she got extra support from the Punkrock-experts from Billy Talent. At other times her songs get an almost Cabaret-like storytelling character, like in "Day One" or "Out in the Park". You can find the thematic content of the record in her "20s crisis", as she calls it. Last summer she "burned her house down", everything appeared useless to her, she didn't know how to go on. A stay in a lonely forest was the right therapy. When staying in the summer house she didn't just spend her time running with a bucket to the nearest well, but also with the making of several paintings. You can find the results in the booklet of "Day One"... ---- http://www.live-magazin.de/rubriken/cd/cd02.htm Elegant extravaganza, thriving rhythms, charm and good lyrics and melodies - Sarah Slean has everything that Madonna has lost and Kylie never had. In 1997 the now 26 year old Canadian first emerged into Toronto's songwriting scene. As a teenager she started, building on her classical piano training to put her own songs on paper, and she soon made the Canadian club stages. The humour and the lost optimism she works with, both lyrically and musically, have unmistakenly remained on her third LP. New is only the rhythm section, that gives the partly Gwen Stefani soundalike a driving ground and often quoted "dot"(?). |

Kind of disturbing, yet very cool at the same time...a song you can't get out of your head, a bug you can't get out of your ear...I really like that. |

haha ok. I guess I should've figured 'earwurm' would mean 'ear worm'... hehe
I'm excited to see in that last one that she's getting RADIO PLAY! ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

I'm totally going to start saying "This song is so earwurm!"
"I don't need you to buy me dinner. I just need you to love me." |

Sarah Slean - Day one WEA VOe: 04.04.2005 Play time: 50:45 min. Our evaluation: 6/10 6/10 Your -evaluation: 5/10 5/10 (average value) Robin Love and revolution. Two large words. And surely the most frequently selected topics for texts of modern Popularmusik. Clearly, is also both tightening, and which one should take already otherwise: The in music under-painted exchange of trinkspruechen is in the long term probably just as fatiguing as constant deliberated silence to entrueckter Instrumentaldudelei. Rather fall back then like Sarah Slean to proof of worth, which connect red heart with the colored flag and which call large revolution in. In times by rose and tulip revolutions naturally not forceful, but hand presented friendly with nice smile in the face and. Flower revolution evenly! "Day one", the third album of the 26-jaehrigen kanadierin, is the kunterbunten sound TRACKS for the new start after the Big fears for represents. Big fear for why? And which kind? No matter, no dry policy waits here, but beschwingte fall joy in the musical Cabaret garb. "Meet ME on the true path/I'll dizzy from growing wings" is called it in "Pilgrim". Evenly, no fear, because on the correct side even wings grow one, as long as one believes only firmly enough in it. Therefore is to be danced to diagonal Streichermelodien, playful piano tones and Mrs. Sleans of gewitzter voice. The songs quickly and variedly come along. Solid American Songwriterschule forms the background, and over it a surprising various at tones unloads itself. Even Billy talent guitarist Ian D'Sa may strike thereby times into its - this time however to plueschigeren - strings. If then doubts about the positive course of the things come nevertheless and the lady disappointed in the besinnliche "Vertigo" wishes itself, nevertheless further with stubborn optimism one answers: "Faith can't fill the dancehall/' Cause ago powers have declined/But RK the beauty pageant/She wants always take the prize." Beauty evenly always remains with love and romantic revolution. As is the case for the gently whispered "Wake UP" or the sunny, of the lyra box man accompanied afternoon "Out into the park". That is beautiful. And often also unfortunately so shallowly and arbitrary that all aufmuepfigen ideas want to be exchanged fast against Plueschpantoffel and Kuscheldecke. And even in the in the afternoon radio a Plaetzchen for Sarah Slean rausspringen might. If it runs well, then in a distance the Cardigans and Kate Bush. With beauty the mass is to be had evenly rather, as with idealistic sayings and up-stretched fists. Fies, sowas. (Tobias Wallusch) Highlight: Pilgrim; Lucky ME; Out into the park; Wake UP TRACK cunning: Pilgrim; Lucky ME; Mary; California; Day one; Out into the park; Vertigo; When more another midnight; The score; Your wish is my wish; Wake UP (11) |

Criticism: Rare that is to be impressed music author/fan who can be read here and astonishment. It succeeded to the German "Rolling Stone" nevertheless on page 23, when it, saw the reader, with paging through the singer Sarah Slean and the magazine from loud fright bought. A nice, small article, how was judged, and a totally beautiful photo, which one would like to dearest never forget. But it happened and like that was again it frightening, when in some InterNet forums the name emerged again. Searches on it resulted in then: The album "Day One" appeared on 4 April - that cannot be nevertheless at all. Only after surprise lasting several minutes it occurs to the Bewunderer again: It has the album since a half year in the CD cabinet, because it was it at that time on the Ron Sexsmith concert, with Sarah Slean as support act. And it was in such a way impressed and into it in such a way slammed of the lady that it bought exeptionally no Sexsmith t Shirt, but the Sarah Slean CD to only find in order it out a half hour later that it is simply not good. The performance in the autumn 2004 in the Hamburg Knust was coined/shaped by Intimitaet and aesthetics. Elegantly painted the Waldfee over their key board, urgently induced it to their music and sang themselves their texts, as it did not make apparent ever someone before. It was the feeling to be allowed to experience the beginning somewhat new large ones. And there also the broken CD coverings did not make for anything with the purchase and that one sits for it Sexsmith at that bar left. But on that CD "Day One", their second, works that everything after the gradlinigsten radio-mixes, which one could make also only somehow. Sarah Sleans main instrument is the piano, on which she can play beautiful melodies and harmonies to her Songs. Why the piano does not emerge sometimes any longer ("Pilgrim"), sometimes strongly into the background was mixed ("Out in The park"), knows hopefully the producers, does and Sarah however no favours thereby. Instead guitars and schlagzeug ("Lucky ME") kill us and devour by "the best mix (...) from today" the intelligent text the kanadierin. Also the programmed Drums and the pathetischen Streicher in "California" work perfectly deplaziert and only in the Titelsong have one at all the feeling times somewhat from the Genialitaet debut album, Night of nose, to feel. Also the following "Vertigo" affects the listener in places, of which he would not no more have thought after the first songs already. Only and alone the Artwork of the Booklets knows to convince from the front to in the back. Painted of the artist, afterwards one would not only like to visit their concerts, but also one would like to take Sarah Slean to exhibitions and after the reconciliation dearest again with home: for "one made finally nevertheless times everything correct Your Wish Is My Wish", only Sarahs singing and their piano play and with a song. After that somewhat confusing, but nevertheless beautiful "Wake UP", on which it plays also still guitar, be void yourself now nevertheless still its musical feeling and one wishes itself the third album like the last two songs, or equal an Live album! Sarah Slean did not want to probably make Popmusik with "Day One" a successful Popalbum, only unfortunately makes it. Anspieltipps: # Vertigo # Day One # Wake UP # Your Wish Is My Wish Christian Kruschel |
