Meet The Nominees: Sarah Slean Keeps Her Bags Packed, With Junos

If there�s a button in the room, Sarah Slean is probably showing it up for cuteness. The singer-songwriter brought her unique musical style � equal parts tragic piano and bouncing cabaret � back into the studio for her 2004 release, Day One, throwing in some rhythm and electronic touches. The result? A couple of Juno nominations for the pop pixie.

Day One is up for Adult Alternative Album Of The Year, while two who that worked behind the scenes on the album, Peter Prilesnik and Eric Ratz, were nominated for Recording Engineer Of The Year.

ChartAttack had a chance to chat with Sarah Monday at the Juno Nominees press conference in Toronto.

ChartAttack: We�re sick of this whole "Canadian modesty" thing � can you give us some blatant self-promotion to justify your nomination?
Sarah Slean: Uhhh� you are a cruel man. No I can�t. I can�t! I�ve done my best to be an American, I went to L.A., I lived there for a month � can�t do it. It just doesn�t come naturally. I think there�s something in the water that makes us moral.

There�s all these sexy duets at American awards shows (with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony coming up for the Grammys), so who would you like to do a sexed-up duet with at the Junos?
Ooooh, that�s a great question. Sexy duets, hmm. I�d really have to think about that. I would love to sing with K-OS. I would love to sing with� Matt Mays and I would do a song, that would be good.

If you win, do you actually have a mantle to put the award on?
No, I would be putting it in my suitcase. That�s where I live. I don�t have a home right now, it�s very sad. They should make a key chain variety, don�t�cha think? That�s what Canadian artists need.

Anne Murray is like the Juno Queen, she�s got 24 of them, eclipsing everyone else � so name one activity where you know you could kick her ass.

If you win, what are you gonna do to celebrate?
If I win, I think to celebrate I might go somewhere really warm, take my little toy guitar and be on a beach for a couple of days.

Do you watch the Junos when you�re not a nominee?
Yes I do! I get all excited too, and I go "Come on!" and I cheer at the TV screen. It�s pretty sad.

The Junos are on a Sunday � honestly now, are you going to tape Desperate Housewives?
Ha ha! No. I told you I don�t live anywhere, I don�t have a television. It�s bad for you, it�s poisonous.

last time i was there Shaye was playing and they asked for tequila while on stage. and then someone kicked them by accident while on stage and it all spilled (GAH!)

I had to laugh at the "slean not ugly" headline and them titling of one of her shots as "damn".

How about post-Junos tequila shots with Anne Murray here in Winnipeg! Now that would be something to see.

I'm so psyched for the Junos. I'm so hoping to see a K-OS or Sarah Slean show pop up during Junofest (the 2 days leading up) and have one of them join the other on stage. It would be cool to see Sarah accompany "The Love Song" or K-OS to do his rap from "When Another Midnight" live.
