Don't know if this has been posted yet but found it over at the University of Manitoba site:

"Sarah Slean tried to be retro; she didnt quite make it. The album is good, but it isnt perfect. At times it is quite melodic, and these are the times I would say its good. At other points the record is wavering on the line between music and musical score. This could work, but the balance needs to be carefully constructed. It needs to be thought through and considered. Day One is not carefully conceived. Its an album that feels brazen. Perhaps Slean awoke one morning and said to herself, Self, I am going to write an album this week, and sat and did it. This might not be true, but the album feels as though it were. Kids, if there is one thing I have to learn in my life its not to rush things. If only Sarah Slean had come to me for advice.

Hmmm....disagree, with the review, but I'm usually biased towards Sarah's stuff. Obviously the reviewer doesn't know the back story to the album.

On a more positive note, my sister told me Western Ontario's paper named Day One album of the year. Smiler

I don't think she was trying to be retro....Sarah's music doesn't fall under that or really any strict category.

It's sad that the author didn't really do much research, because it wouldn't have taken very long to find out that some of these songs have been played for a few years.[/quote]

Thanks for the reviews YenC

Wow ---- journalism at its worse. I can take bad Sarah reviews.. some of them are warrented.. but that was just pure... ignorance.

` I wanna be the bluebird singing
Singing to the roses in her yard
Roses in her yard her father grew for her
It's been raining like Tennessee honey
So long I got too heavy to fly
Ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing `

"The album is good, but it isnt perfect."

That's my favorite line from this piece of crap. To me that line is supposed to come off as negative but it does a terrible job at doing so.

"wavering on the line between music and musical score" - thats another gem.

that review is pretty funny really.
