Ok here goes.

As are many of you, I am in love with the piano.

My piano kind of sucks (but I would never tell it that!!!). I bought it for $75 -- it was in the flood... the hammers needed replacing probably about 10 years before I bought it... cigarette burns on the wood... you get the picture. I really want to eventually purchase a Yamaha piano, I like the tone colour and weight of them the best of any pianos I have played thus far.

I don't know what exactly I am asking -- just what pianos you like or don't like... what music you are playing these days (I am gearing up some Bach, Hayden, Liszt and Schaefer for my grade 9 RCM exam. Oh and Linus and Lucy. Damn that is fun to play!)

Oh and have any pf you ever played a real Mellotron? That is something I want to do before I die.

I don't play, but would love to.

Been shopping around a bit lately for my piano playing daughter, ergo a low cost one.

I've heard that auction houses, in particular farmhouse auctions can yield some gems <$100. But what would repairs, tuning and moving cost?

You have to be soooo careful with "deal" pianos... they can be passable, and you CAN get great pianos that way if you know what to look for. I am getting a better idea but would still advise you take an "expert" with you, like a tuner or piano teacher to make sure you don't get burned. A piano that has been flooded will probably need new strings, which will run $800 never mind the installation. You are pretty safe getting what you pay for if you spend $3000, or so I hear. Moving for any piano will cost around $150 and tuning $90.

I love my piano - she's definitely gotten me through some good and bad times! I got her when I was in the International Music Academy - I was taking lessons and learned that I needed more than what my little keyboard could provide, so my parents bought me a Samick piano which cost around $800, I think. She's so pretty - great tone and great weight in the keys.

I had a teacher and she had a piano that was brought over from Germany and the keys were incredibly light. I played this one song that was supposed to be fast (I believe it was by Bach, so it was one of those really smooth pieces) and I was so nervous that I flew through the piece in a matter of seconds. It was great fun to play.

I also once played a piano for a recital that was at some Pioneer House where I live. The piano was up on some wooden platform, so you couldn't press the pedal down, since it was a good foot off the floor, so they put a wooden box under the pedal so you could press down on it. But the bench was still the same height, so you were kind of crunched in there with your knees up too high and it was very awkward to play.

Anyway, let's just say that I am happy with my purchase. Smiler

Wait ... my mind has totally escaped me - the piano wasn't $800, it was more like $3000-$4000. I tend to forget prices when it's not coming out of my pocket (thanks Mom and Dad!).

Sounds like going the $100 farm auction root is akin to playing the lottery. hmmmmm....and $3000 is wayyy to much to spend for a 10 year old that is just "trying" it out.

Perhaps I'll try one of these rent-to-own deals.

Any advice on brand names?

thanks for the feedback folks... Big Grin

Indeed.

It remains to be seen if the boys at Steve's Music will have a clue what i'm talking about when I ask for a piano with a "sparkly" feel. Big Grin

Haha.

or one that wears army boots. I think I'd want a piano that wears army boots, a knee-length skirt, a tank-top and tie combo, and Amy Lee hair. With a bit of a sparkly feel.

Speaking of pianos, there's a store called Lawley's in Halifax that has a room in the back full of Steinways... yum. I love to go there and just play - everything sounds beautiful on a Steinway... one day, it will be mine...

I alomst orgasmed when I drove past that store. Good god what i would give for a Steinway. My parents sold our piano - I moved out and my brother took up the guitar - but I still love to play, even though my chances to now are small.

Are you from Halifax too? You should stop in sometime, they're very nice. The times I've gone, there's a very kind person sitting in the Steinway room, and he's glad to let you play. Oooohhhh, I want to go there right now. But it'll be closed before I get there. Tomorrow.

I'm in Antigonish at the moment for school but I'd give an arm to be in Halifax 8). The 'Nish isn't the most exciting part of the province.
I live in Sydney when i'm not at school  now THERE'S a great place.
