[quote:965637ed18="Sweet One"]oh, that's frustrating. So an artist that spans the two can never be as 'officially' successful as they probably would be if you combined the two charts?

So, just to clarify, if Artist X gets played 30 times on a country station, and 50 times on a hip-hop station, they'll show up as 30 plays on the country chart and 50 on the hip-hop chart???
hmm... this bothers me lol.[/quote:965637ed18]

Yeah. It just depends on which station it is.

And no, if a song gets airplay on two different formats, it just means it's a multi-format hit. For example, Daniel Powter's 'Bad Day' is big on both CHR and Hot AC in Canada. The formats pretty much work independently of each other in this sense. However, if a song is a big CHR hit, other stations from other formats may pick up on it due to requests or whatever and play it, like 'Breakaway' by Kelly Clarkson. It was a CHR hit first and then an AC hit.
Sarah's song just happens to fit in among playlists on both AC and Hot AC in Canada. I don't think it would have been more successful on one if the other didn't play it though.

HMmm... true. I guess i mean it would've charted higher if ALL its plays had been on one format, rather than another. For example if in one week she got 130 plays on format A and 70 on format B, and another song got 200 plays on format A and JUST format A, that other song would be perceived has having been more 'successful' and would chart much higher, despite having only been played the same amount of times.

Could be argued but I think a ton more goes into what determines a song's success than just radio airplay. For example, if Kelly Clarkson had a song that did about as well as 'Mary' did, it would have been considered a failure. But Sarah's song did fairly well so I would consider 'Mary' a hit. Not huge but still a hit nonetheless. Had all of Sarah's spins been on just one format, she would have charted higher but she got more airplay on more stations, more than likely, so more people got to hear her.
