Any awards show that nominates Avril lavigne as best songwriter loses credibility with me. And don't even get me started on Ryan malcolm.
~Love me for stupid reasons, I like those most~ |

On Canada.com they have an interactive poll on who's going to win sarah's catagory.
Sarah is in the lead now but a cached search showed this: A new Juno category has been created for Adult Alternative Album. Which of these nominated artists deserves to win the prize? Sarah Harmer 33.65 % Matt Mays 2.88 % Ron Sexsmith 18.27 % Sarah Slean 9.62 % Rufus Wainwright 35.58 % VOTE NOW, LEFT SIDE |

voted, for ss of course, but i think those numbers simply reflect mainstream public name recognition.
I still think SS has got a decent shot @ it. ...jim [i:53cc3dbc5d]there's good love out there, just you wait[/i:53cc3dbc5d] |

I don't understand why there cannot be a music award show that is somewhat Oscar like. I mean there are some instances from the Oscars where people or movies win awards and people are a little puzzled but overall it is talent based, and/or artisticly based.
The Junos should really restructure itself next year to give Canada's music awards some credibility(never going to happen). Simple Plan doesn't deserve to be mentioned (just one example). They write shit songs based on the most useless topics (teenage angst, depression, on and on and on, blah!). I don't care if anyone listens to Simple Plan or similiar bands, that's just fine, but to award or even nominate such unartistic drivel is numbing. The new category introduced is a step in the right direction. I sure hope it is a category that is announced on the actual televised Juno night. I may complain a lot about it, but I'll still watch |

I agree, it's getting more and more commercial. One article I read said something along the lines of "for artists like Celine and Bryan Adams, they don't even need to have good albums, just releasing anything will get them a nomination" and it's true. There's very little surpise with the Junos now. We all know that Celine, Shania, and all the big shots will be nominated. It's sad that they're leaning more towards the Grammy's than an actual art-based award.

thanks for the line up.
i look forward to seeing k-os. a live version of Love Song would be nice but I think one of his bigger singles will fit the occasion best. Simple Plan is not cup of tea for most but they have been receiving international success. They just played the MTV Asia Music Awards / Benefit. (it's on Much today). the positive deal for the junos is that it does recognize a bunch of canadian great canadian musicans. over the past years emm gryner, slean, buck 65, sexsmith, bss, the new deal, etc have been atleast nominated. i don't think the American Music Awards, MTV, Billboard, Source, etc support indie muscians or ones with the smaller followings that the Junos step behind. I would like to see them do more of it. Cameron Bay. fave juno memories, shania in her leafs jersey dress a few years ago *l* |

I agree. I am sick of bands winning because they sold many albums. I'm sorry but the pre-teen ratio out does us all these days. I think that is trite and not a good way to represent Canadian Talent. I think the Juno's need to pull up their socks and take one for the team. I'd like to see lesser known people be nominated, and the main attraction artists like the Simple Plans and Avril Lavinges to be placed off to the side. Actually, I'd love to see the Juno's put a East-Coast Music Awards swing to things.

I don't think that should have any effect on what happens at the Junos. That's a huge problem in my opinion with them is that they base themselves too much on international success of artists. "And now I think I'll get through..." |

Look at the Oscars... Titanic was Best Picture 1997? It's a shame that many of these awards are based on financial and commercial success. |

As I posted in a different thread (can't remember which one) I hope that I can catch a Junofest performance locally where Sarah joins k-os or vice versa for that song or When Another Midnight. It'd be awesome. [quote:86bc11ef5a]Neil Young?!!! The rock legend himself, performing that night?!!! I'm so gonna watch it good![/quote:86bc11ef5a] Yeah, the guy made an off-the-cuff remark years ago that he'd only go to the Junos if they had it in Winnipeg. Once they had it in Winnipeg, they started working on bringing him in (which included Randy Bachman of The Guess Who/BTO actually going to Neil's home in the U.S. and convincing him of it). Of course, then the Junos decided they didn't want Winnipeg's music royalty, Bachman and Burton Cummings, to perform at the event. So now there's this huge backlash in Winnipeg towards the Junos committee and all they're saying is "the final performers' schedule hasn't been announced yet". But regardless, Neil Young playing at the Junos in the town he got his musical start will be awesome! |
