[quote:3149bef2b1="ProdigyBoy"]There are a couple of visual ques here more then i see on some other boards i'm on. The posts above I think all have pretty ratitional reasons to why.

Whoa, that sentence didn't make any sense at all... You might wanna clarify.

Nikolita, I definitely agree that men rarely look up to women that show their emotions... I think they see it as a sign of weakness.

Personally, it just seems so stereotypical to classify homosexual males as generally more feminine. Sometimes they are, sometimes they are not, but I'm lost when it comes to associating sexual preference with peronality types and emotional expression.
That's just how I see it ^.^

I think it's because males are supposed to conform to a certain "societal role" and listening to this kind of music a negative toward that idea that men have to be. Gay males don't have to follow that "unwritten rule" so they are more free to like this kind of music. That's my assumption. Personally, I don't care to follow what society tells me to and I like the music anyway.

Yea, that sounds about right.
I also don't feel the need to conform to such standards, but I get easily frustrated at generalizations regardless :P
Ah well.

johnathan, tim, cameron, pazu:

my continued respect gents...

I never make assumptions about the guy slean fans that I have met, but I err on the side of "good possibility of being gay."

I never ask, I really don't care. Ok. Maybe sometimes I wonder but I still never ask. Wink

~nicole g

interesting side story: It was so funny when I met Neal (aka SweetOne) in person for the first time. I had never actually "met" anyone from the internet before ... (well, I met Hanson at a slean show in Vancouver, and Tab in Toronto last year but that was sort of different). My friends were all like "That's so weird. What if he's a creep who hits on you?" And I just scoffed and said, "Yeah it's kind of weird but really, he's probably gay." I was SO smug that night when my friend was bugging me about my visit and I just said "Yup. Gay."

hope you don't mind me telling the story Neal!!!

(Neal, by the way, who is an awesome cool guy that came out to a Tamara Williamson show with me when I was in Toronto this summer... just narrowly missing being with me the next night at an NQ Arbuckle show where Sarah Slean was in the audience!)

Awww Nicole you're so sweet! And of course I'm not creepy! hahaha.
For the record, Nicole rocks too, as does Vancouver (mmmm Blenz...)
And yeah totally OT but Tamara is really cool.. as were the "headliners" that night -- Pony Da Look. I just ordered their album from amazon... Big Grin

it's kinda weird, when I tell people that I don't know very well that I love Sarah and other singers like Norah Jones, I think the first thing that comes to their mind is like "yeah, he's gay" :?

I guess it's too bad that there's that kinda stereotype floating around, how only gay males can like only "softer" music (and techno music too, I guess). I really like a hardcore band called Limp Wrist, whose members are all gay (to the best of my knowledge) and occasionally sing about gay rights in a style that's ten times heavier as any of Sarah's songs, so I guess people just gotta open their minds up a bit more.

So true.
I'm glad my friends have open minds about taste and personality for the most part. Even some strangers I meet don't form impressions like that, but stereotyping does live on with many people, unfortunately.

I haven't lived in Newfoundland but I was just wondering, is it common there in St John's for guys to wear those thick framed glasses? (matthew good glasses).
I was home for Xmas last year and went to the Avalon Mall and I swear I didn't see a single guy with those glasses. I felt so out of place.
Also, people with lip piercings? Are there many guys with those? LOL! I'll probably be singled out as being gay or something because I have both; even though I'm not. They are common in Halifax but I'm not sure how common they are in NL. I'm curious before I go back there this Xmas. Wink

I see a lot of guys with those glasses your talking about around the MUN campus. Don't see too many lip rings though.

I don't consider either of those to be gay. The black rimmed glasses always seemed "emo" to me, if you know what that means (I think of Rivers Cuomo - Weezer). Lip rings perhaps punk. But not stereotypically gay. Anyways if your singled out as being gay I don't think many here take that as being a bad thing heh. I hope not anyways.

LOVE the band name. And the concept. Do they have a website?

Well, where I went to school it was definately a bad thing. To be called gay or any variation of the word was to mean you weren't liked. Unfortunate, I know. I notice that Halifax seems to be much more open to the whole thing than anytime I've ever lived in NL. Of course I never lived in St John's so I don't know how that city sits with it.

this is the best I could find, as I think they may be broken up now.
do a bit of research on them though......their song "Limp Wrist vs. Dr. Laura" is particularly excellent Smiler
