[quote:c52075c18c="themaxonline"]I haven't lived in Newfoundland but I was just wondering, is it common there in St John's for guys to wear those thick framed glasses? (matthew good glasses).
I was home for Xmas last year and went to the Avalon Mall and I swear I didn't see a single guy with those glasses. I felt so out of place. Also, people with lip piercings? Are there many guys with those? LOL! I'll probably be singled out as being gay or something because I have both; even though I'm not. They are common in Halifax but I'm not sure how common they are in NL. I'm curious before I go back there this Xmas. This was written a while back, but I decided to comment anyway. I've noticed it's not that common with my age group, seeing how I'm 15.. but I noticed a lot of guys with thicked rimmed glasses downtown, they're probably in their 20's. Yeah, but I've never really put the connection to homosexuality with them. I love those glasses. I'm getting a pair once I get my eyes checked again. ;p |

I would never connect lip rings and thick-framed glasses with "gay". In fact, that makes no sense to me.

Hmm. thick-rimmed glasses are such a vague descriptor. I suppose if they were Elton John-style I might consider them a little gay. Otherwise, not really.
Lip rings? I don't know any gay men with lip rings. Ok wait, maybe one. But I know like.. probably hundreds of gay men. If that says anything at all. ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

I dunno. I guess I was always surrounded with the idea that people that didn't follow a specific norm were considered "gay". Whatever. I see tons of people every day with lip rings and eyebrow and nose and whatever and they don't look gay but even if they are, whatever. Same with thick rimmed glasses.
Besides, with my experience, gay people are generially more friendly anyway... in groups, at least. Gay bars are probably better than non-gay ones to go to, assuming your goal isn't to get laid or whatever but just to go out. "And now I think I'll get through..." |

Erm, I assume you must be refering to "gay" being used in the context of an insult, not a literal "likes boys" sense. Otherwise, I can't imagine what kind of stupid environment you must live in. |

Yeah, it was an insult and the stupid environment was small town newfoundland. Not anymore but in junior and high school.

It'll be ok. One day, we will be able to educate everyone. Until then, we will keep fighting for equality and acceptance! ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

Sweet One, youre gay? Wha?!?
Seriously though.I appreciate the struggle for acceptance the gay community facesone hopes things are continuing to improve. As for the stereo-typical heterosexual male not being open to the beauty and joy of music like Sarahs? Well, seems to me its his loss. ...jim [i:53cc3dbc5d]there's good love out there, just you wait[/i:53cc3dbc5d] |

I find it somewhat typical for teenage boys to be homophobic.. not all, I'm not saying all. I just noticed with my experience that a lot of males from the age pf 10-15 are homophobic, or just kind of closed minded towards the topic.
Which is irritating. Females as well. I remember what this one girl in counselor in training camp said... "I would never want to hug a 'lezbo,' then again.. I don't think any girl would..." I was like... what the hell?! Not every lesbian is attracted to every female. I'm not gay, and I get asked that a lot, because I defend homosexuals. The world of 15, booo. :S |

well I think most kids ages 10-15 are stupid to begin with, or at least very ignorant. I certainly wouldn't say I was a smart kid throughout junior high. So at that age i'll give em a fair chance to grow. But after that people should at least be starting to grow up (notice the "should"... too many exceptions).

The world of 15, booo. :S[/quote:153189b846] I still find it difficult to believe that Julie is only 15. You're wayyy too smart and mature for a 15 year old. God help the silly little 15 year old boys trying to impress you. ...jim [i:53cc3dbc5d]there's good love out there, just you wait[/i:53cc3dbc5d] |

[/quote:1a3be32ccc] Well, I could go on for hours about that label, but for all intents and purposes, yeah :P What tipped you off? ~ If this is the car, that I must drive to the job, that I must keep for the house, and a man I don't love; count me out. ~ ~ Sweet hope is glowing in your glorious eyes ~ |

Yeah, Julie, I know what you mean about getting that a lot because you defend gay rights. I'm straight, but I fit many of the "stereotypes" surrounding the "gay" image. Maybe listening to Sarah Slean is one of them? Personally, it doesn't bother me - I always defend gay rights. My exgirlfriend is bisexual. But I still find that people use "gay" as though it's supposed to be an insult. And I've been harassed in public by people who mistakenly assume I am gay. It's ignorant, and sad.
